GOVERNING RULES & REGULATIONS

TRADITIONAL VOLLEYBALL GAME CHARACTERISTICS
Traditional Volleyball is a sport played by two teams on a playing court divided by a net. There are
different versions available for specific circumstances in order to offer the versatility of the game to
everyone.

The object of the game is to send the ball over the net in order to ground it on the opponent’s court, and
to prevent the same effort by the opponent. The team has a maximum of 3 touches for returning the
ball – Three Touch Play (the second touch is only off the net).

The ball is put in play with a service: hit by the server over the net to the opponents. The rally continues
until the ball is grounded on the playing court, goes “out” or a team fails to return it properly.

In Traditional Volleyball, the team holding service and winning a rally scores a point. When the receiving
team wins a rally, it gains the right to serve.

USE OF THIS STANDARD RULES
These rules are set by the Dar es Salaam Volleyball Oversee Committee (DVOC) which has been
formed through a formal recognition by all Dar es Salaam based traditional volleyball teams
which was tasked with the standardisation of traditional volleyball for all member teams to
adhere to. Only the DVOC shall have the right to make any changes to these rules and
regulations after these changes have been ratified by the committee. ALL teams and organisers
of any traditional volleyball tournament held shall adhere strictly to these rules and ANY
deviation from these rules and regulations MUST be sanctioned in writing by the DVOC
Secretariat.

Optional changes allowed
DVOC shall allow certain rules to be set by the organisers of any tournament based on the Options
provided in these rules. These are specified below in the sections they relate to. However, these options
MUST be clearly specified in the tournament invitation and/or captains’/draw meetings that MUST be
conducted well before the start of the tournament. In order to clarify further these optional changes are
